For a deeper dive into conspiracy and power beginning with Rome, we're currently reading Jared Yates Sexton's new book, "Midnight Kingdom—A History of Power, Paranoia, and The Coming Crisis". It's quite illuminating; showing and documenting patterns of paranoia through the millennia. He provides a better understanding of enemies of Democracy, so that, together, we can deploy effective corrective solutions.

I would posit that the Salem Witchcraft Trials were also part of early conspiracy theories in the British Colonies. After all, how better to explain the bad fortune of one's livestock not producing, or one's crops failing than to point to a supposed witch's curse?
